What to inspect before paying a landscape contractor
Practical guidance for homeowners across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.
Before making the final payment on a landscaping project, walk the whole job carefully.
Check against the agreed work
Start with what was agreed. Check the quotation, drawings and any later variations so you know what should actually have been delivered.

Walk through the finished garden
- Look at paving, walls, steps and edges closely. Check for loose units, uneven joints, rocking slabs, damaged finishes and areas where water may collect. Paths and terraces should drain as intended rather than sending water towards the house or neighbouring property.
- Check gates, fences, doors, lighting, irrigation and any moving or powered items. Make sure everything operates properly rather than simply looking finished.
- For planting, check that the agreed quantities and sizes are present, that plants are correctly positioned and that trees are properly staked where needed. Lawns should be even and any damaged areas from construction should have been made good.
Collect the handover information
Ask for relevant documentation before the contractor leaves. This may include electrical certificates, warranties, product information, irrigation instructions and care guidance for new planting.
Agree what is still outstanding
Make a written list of unfinished work and faults and agree when outstanding items will be completed.
Final payment should follow satisfactory completion of the agreed work, not simply the point when the main construction team leaves the site.
