April in the garden: getting everything moving

A practical monthly guide for gardens across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire.

April is when the garden really starts moving again. Across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire the soil is warming, trees are coming into leaf and borders begin to change almost daily.

Watch for cold nights

It can also be a deceptive month. A warm afternoon can make it feel as if summer has arrived, but cold nights and late frosts are still possible. Keep an eye on tender new growth and do not rush anything frost-sensitive outside.

Get borders and lawns ready

This is a good time to get borders back into shape. Clear the last of the winter debris, tackle weeds while they are still small and add compost or mulch around established shrubs and perennials. It helps feed the soil and keeps moisture in later in the year.

Roses will appreciate a feed now. Climbers can be tied in before their new growth gets too unruly. Lawns usually start growing properly too, so begin regular mowing without cutting too short. Bare patches can be repaired while conditions are mild.

Plant with care

Hardy annuals and wildflowers can be sown outside, and there is still time to plant shrubs and perennials. Anything newly planted will need watching if April turns dry.

Leave room for wildlife

Do not tidy every corner. Leaving a little cover gives insects somewhere to shelter while the garden wakes up.

April is mostly about getting the basics right. A few well-timed jobs now make the rest of spring easier.
